Creating Entrepreneurs

Savita Kanswal

Hailing from the small hilly village of Lonthru, of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand, 25 years old Savita Kanswal’s story is one of grit and determination. Savita has had a childhood like most other girls, from rural Indian families of humble economic background. However, Savita unlike most of us, chose not to walk the trodden path. Instead, she chose to climb. Fighting all odds, this gritty 25 years old from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand, has summitted many a high peak. As a social oraganisation Bakri Chhap firmly believes in youth and women empowerment. So, being able to support Savita Kanswal in her Everest Massif Expedition 2021, organised by the Indian Mountaineering Federation and sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports India, had given us a new high. Her successful summiting of Mt Lhotse (8516 m), the 4th highest peak in the world, and to be the second Indian woman and the only woman from Uttarakhand to achieve this feat, gives us further impetus to help her in her future expeditions. And we are very proud that now she has successfully summitted Mt Everest (8848 m) & Mt Makalu (8485 m – 5th highest peak) within a span of a few weeks. It gives us immense pleasure that Savita is a part of our team and one of our young rural entrepreneurs.  She will be instrumental in leading our ecologically sustainable trekking initiatives  ‘Green Experiences’.

Pradeep Panwar

Pradeep Panwar has been associated with Bakri Chhap Agro-Tourism and Natural Products Pvt. Ltd since its inception in 2015 at The Goat Village, Nag Tibba.  He was the very first employee hired to run the project of the place. He was already an ace mountaineering guide and he was handheld and trained in house-keeping and hospitality.

Bakri Chhap also helped educate local farmers, supported animal husbandry, collected farm produce from them, promoted clean and green tourism and brought about massive changes in the area. Several locals started their homestays, small eateries, adventure companies and became trekking guides.

Pradeep wanted to bring a similar change in his small but beautiful village, Matholi in Uttarkashi, now known as 'The Women Village' a.k.a. Bwari Gaon. With Bakri Chhap’s support, he has built a quaint and comfortable homestay while training women of his village to take the lead in its management.  He is also focusing on developing his farmland so that the produce can directly reach consumers. He believes that the revenues he will earn through this venture will encourage many like him to take the leap of faith and help develop their own village and take pride in it."

Pradeep Panwar is now an empowered entrepreneur and a part of the Bakri Chhap Core Team.
